TS plans to change name of Nandi awards

December 30, 2014 12:08 am | Updated 12:08 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The Telangana Government is actively considering changing the name of ‘Nandi’ awards given for excellence in film and television fields.

“Three names, including ‘Ekashila’, the welcome arch/gateway of Kakatiya’s capital Orugallu (now Warangal) – are in the consideration of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao,” Minister for Cinematography and Commercial Taxes Talasani Srinivas Yadav said here on Monday.

Speaking after a delegation of film chambers met him, the Minister said he has been holding talks with various associations and groups of the Telugu film industry as part of the government plans to encourage it. He said the film industry was very much stable in Hyderabad and the government is taking all steps to support it.

Various bodies of the film industry would hold a meeting among themselves in January and come up with proposals for its growth. The Chief Minister would soon hold a meeting with the bigwigs of the Telugu film industry, Mr. Yadav noted.

He said that cinema theatres were not paying entertainment tax properly on the sale of ticket by showing false statistics. The GHMC is developing a software to monitor the actual sale of tickets as a sizeable number of it are sold online so that the entertainment tax is collected properly, the Minister added.
