The society still accepts fingerprints as undeniable, unchangeable evidence of the identity and Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) is a tool to nab the criminals efficiently, said Telangana DGP M. Mahender Reddy.

He said AFIS plays vital role in investigations, virtually replacing traditional manual methods of fingerprint matching and classification. While addressing the Conference, Mr. Reddy said Telangana State Finger Print Bureau is the first in the country to implement new generation and an International standard of AFIS in record time.

“We are the first State to incorporate palm print based live scanner system for enrolment of criminal’s finger prints electronically and also deployed an android based single finger identification system to verify the criminal antecedents of a suspect in the field,” he said.

According to Mr Reddy, out of 868 undetected cases solved by using AFIS, as many as 480 cases were old unsolved scene-of-crime cases.
