A traffic police Sub-Inspector and a constable allegedly attacked a taxi driver at a junction near Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan School in Filmnagar after an altercation over issue of challan for jumping red signal on Thursday morning.

The driver, identified as Narasimha, saw the amber light that blinks before the green light switches on and started proceeding towards Filmnagar when constable Srinivas stopped the vehicle and took him to Sub-Inspector Dattatreya. The driver picked up an argument with Mr. Dattatreya for issuing a challan of Rs.200 for ‘jumping’ the signal. When the driver refused to pay the penalty, the SI asked him to surrender his licence and registration documents. But Narasimha refused to hand over the documents and protested the high-handed behaviour of the police towards motorists. As the policemen insisted that he pay the penalty, he showered abuses at them even as passers-by gathered to watch the fracas that lasted for almost 40 minutes. The driver then threw Rs. 200 at the policemen and again abused them.

Infuriated over his behaviour, the constable reportedly attacked him. A few passers-by and other policemen intervened and pacified the driver and policemen. When contacted, Jubilee Hills Traffic Inspector P. Devender confirmed the incident, but said no cases were booked.
