TPCC to protest against land acquisition ordinance

January 25, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has decided to take up an agitation against the ordinance promulgated by the Centre on land acquisition for public purposes harming the interests of farmers. Protests will be held in all the districts on February 23 to create awareness about the ordinance among people.

A meeting was held with City and District Congress Committees’ functionaries and party spokespersons here on Saturday to create awareness among them regarding the revolutionary Act made by the previous UPA government led by the Congress and on the ordinance issued by the BJP-led NDA government diluting the Act. AICC SC Cell chairman Koppula Raju explained how the ordinance undermines the interests of the farmers.

Speaking to newspersons after the meeting, TPCC president Ponnala Lakshmaiah said the NDA government had brought in the ordinance only to benefit the capitalists and corporate companies at the cost of farmers. He stated that the Act was made in 2013 by debating the issue at length in Parliament, but the ordinance was issued without consulting the farming community. Mr. Lakshmaiah demanded that the TRS government in the State respond on the ordinance and adopt resolution against it in both the Houses. The party’s SC Cell would hold district-wise meetings against dilution of the MGNREGS and diversion of funds meant for SC/ST Sub-Plans, he said.

Meanwhile, Congress MP V. Hanmanth Rao said separately that he would take up a ‘yatra’ in Ranga Reddy and Mahabubnagar districts against the ordinance on land acquisition to create awareness among the farmers.
