Torrential downpour which hit the city and its surrounding areas on Thursday and Friday inundated roads, caused traffic logjams, resulted in breakdown of power supply and left life in general, paralysed.
The heavy rain which was to soak the city thoroughly in the next 20 hours or so, began during late afternoon hours on Thursday, and continued in spells of increasing intensity till about 11 p.m. After some gap during night, the rain resumed since Friday morning and lashed the city for over two hours. Though the intensity had dissipated after some time, a fine drizzle kept up till about 2.30 p.m. The downpour began yet again at about 8 p.m. and continued with varying intensities.
The city and suburbs received a rainfall of 13.4 mm till Friday morning, while the Ranga Reddy district reported a total rainfall of 26 mm, official sources informed.
RainfallAccording to the rainfall data available with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Malkapur, in Saidabad mandal recorded the highest rainfall of 23.50 mm in the last 24 hours followed by Rajendranagar in Ranga Reddy district at 20.25 mm. In the city, Narayanguda received a rainfall of 17.50 mm while the rain recording at Sardar Mahal near Charminar stood at 16.75 mm.
The other major rainfall recordings till this morning included L.B. Nagar (16.75 mm), Asifnagar (15.75 mm), Kukatpally (14.75 mm), Madhapur (14 mm) and Fever Hospital at Nallakunta (13.50 mm).
The GHMC Central Emergency received complaints of rain water stagnation and logging from different parts of the city. According to the officials, major complaints of stagnation were received from Chintal Basthi, Nadeem Colony, Lakdi-ka-pul, Nizam College, Gandhi Bhavan, Dharam Karan Road, Lake View Guest House and Somajiguda.
Till Friday afternoon, three complaints of trees falling due to rain were received from Basheerbagh, Dharam Karan road and the Central Excise Colony.
“Our vehicles and staff with required equipment were despatched to the complaints points immediately,” an official said.
Meanwhile, GHCM Commissioner Somesh Kumar inspected different parts of the city from where complaints of water stagnation were received.
Accompanied by senior officials, he visited Toli Chowki, Shaikpet nala, Banjara Hills, Somajiguda and Begumpet and directed the officials to take up immediate measures to clear the problem.
BlackoutsMany areas in the city experienced power interruptions and breakdowns. Trees fell on electrical lines at quite a few locations, hampering the restoration efforts in a big way.
CPDCL officials informed that areas under a total 106 11-KV feeders in Metro Zone experienced power interruptions and breakdowns on Thursday and Friday.
Most affected localities include Karwan, Asmangadh, Asif Nagar, Yakutpura, Sagar Society, Chilkalguda, Film Nagar, Anjaiah Nagar in Kothaguda, Ayyappa Society, Bowenpally, Secunderabad, and Santosh Nagar.
Building material fell on power conductors and resulted in supply breakdown in Yakutpura, while Kandikal Gate and Baba Nagar too had hours of blackouts. Election banners played havoc with power supply at many places.
Areas under Ranga Reddy zone too had prolonged outages.
Tree branches fell on power lines at two locations in Kukatpally, and one in Dilsukhnagar resulting in breakdowns, officials informed. Another tree-fall in Ibrahimpatnam on Thursday night resulted in breakdown of 33kv line which could be rectified only on Friday morning. Insulator flash resulted in power breakdown in Yacharam, officials informed.
Power interruptions were also reported in Hayatnagar.
Crop damageDamage to mango and paddy crop was reported from various mandals of the Ranga Reddy district, though there is no official confirmation. Yacharam, Manchal, Kandukur, Kulkacharla, and Pudur mandals were reportedly among the affected mandals.
However, District Revenue Officer Venkateshwarlu said he had not received any report about crop damage.
