It was a gang of three teenagers which allegedly strangled to death retired government school teacher P. Sarojini in her house at Maruthinagar of Uppuguda in the Old City, the police said on Friday.
The accused, M. Babu (19), K. Madhu (19), and B. Durgadas (18), were caught and Rs. 72,000 they had stolen from her house were recovered, South zone DCP Tarun Joshi said at a press conference. The three living in the same locality learnt that recently the old woman, who lived alone, got a huge sum having sold her house.
Sarojini’s husband had deserted her nearly 30 years ago. Her only son, who is mentally retarded, resides with her elder sister at Trimulgherry.
The two, along with Durgadas, hatched a plot to rob the woman. They entered the old woman’s house by removing the window grills. When she tried to raise an alarm , the trio strangled her to death with a scarf.
Later, they took away Rs. 75,000, a mobile phone and two gold earrings she wore.
Babu and Madhu were also involved in snatching a bag containing Rs. 16,000 four years ago from a clinic in Narayanguda.
