Three members of a goldsmith family committed suicide by consuming cyanide at their house in Kushaiguda, another member who too attempted suicide is battling for life at a hospital, the police said.
The goldsmith, K. Eshwar Chary (50) stayed at Indiranagar in Kushaiguda along with his wife D. Parvathi (45) elder son Prasad (26), daughter-in-law Laxmi Tulasi (24) and younger son Naga Babu (23) for the last few years.
The family was engaged in making gold ornaments after taking orders from jewellery shop owners in the city.
They all hail from Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh.
Consume cyanide“Eshwar mixed cyanide in water and gave it to all the family members to consume it. While all the family members drank it, Laxmi who consumed it in lesser quantity spit it. She did not feed her nine-month-old baby Rohit also,” Inspector Kushaiguda N. Venkata Ramana said.
The woman alerted a neighbour Sukkama about it.
On receipt of information, the police rushed to the house and shifted them to the hospital.
While Eshwar, Parvathi and Babu were declared brought dead at the hospital, Prasad is undergoing treatment. His condition is stated to be critical, the police said quoting doctors.
Relatives of Chary told the police that the family was in debt and also took advance money from jewellery shops owners.
“Whatever they earned was going towards clearing the loans resulting in delays in completing the work on time,” the official said.
