A mechanic landed behind bars along with two of his assistants allegedly for stealing four-wheelers and bikes.

The Petbasheerabad police on Thursday recovered six Maruti cars and two bikes after arresting the mechanic, Y. Swamy, and his workers, M. Subhash and K. Swamy. The mechanic gained expertise in fitting gas conversion kits in cars.

“Since he was familiar with car engine and ignition systems, he got duplicate keys made and used them to steal vehicles,” Balanagar DCP P. Pramod Kumar said. The accused sold one of the stolen cars for Rs. 30,000 and were looking out for buyers for the remaining ones when the police caught them on a tip-off.

The vehicles were stolen from Petbasheerabad, Jeedimetla and Balanagar areas in past two months.
