A total of 1,000 stray dogs have been adopted by residents of various localities in Hyderabad, since the launch of ‘Maa Inti Nestham’ programme by GHMC in April this year.

North Zone is in the leading position with 280 dogs, with South Zone in the second, with 217. East zone had 181 adoptions, Central Zone 170 and West Zone, 163.

The details came out at a review meeting conducted by the GHMC Commissioner B.Janardhan Reddy with veterinary and entomology departments here on Friday.

Mr. Reddy said the Greater Hyderabad has six lakh stray dogs, and GHMC is administering vaccination and birth control surgeries for a lakh each year. In its life span of 12 years, each female dog gives birth to nearly 4,000 pups, and the number of births go up in June and July months, he said.

He urged city residents to come forward to adopt pups and dogs with help from the GHMC veterinary wing. The dogs may be raised at homes, warehouses, and farm houses, he said. Due to this initiative, the dog bite incidents have come down considerably, he mentioned.

Mosquito App

Mr. Reddy also directed officials to take severe action against sellers of unstamped meat from outside the GHMC slaughter houses. He asked them to devise a ‘Mosquito App’ for making citizens part of the vector control programmes.

Rewards should be given to those uploading their efforts for mosquito control on to the app, he said.

In another announcement, the GHMC Commissioner has issued orders for purchase of 50 portable fogging machines, in addition to the existing 150.

The new machines will be equally allotted among the five zones. The decision to purchase the machines was taken in the GHMC Standing Committee meeting on Thursday.
