Sumanth Petta cleared his eighth standard exams in March. And while most of his friends were busy attending summer camps, Sumanth chose a 10-day vacation workshop at Infosys’ Gachibowli campus.
In these 10 days, the boy and his teammates developed a sports information management system — a model website which gives scores of IPL matches.
The site is updated every five seconds and also has information pertaining to the highest run-scorer, wicket-taker, best economy rate, match schedules etc.
“At the camp, tutors taught us about HTML concepts. Using Excel as our backend support system, we developed the website in 10 hours,” says another class eight student.
Five others such teams of schoolchildren developed different projects, including a school website, an e-commerce website and an air-ticket booking system.
The workshop, part of Infosys’ Catch Them Young (CTY) initiative, saw school students — especially eighth-standard children — in attendance. A screening test was conducted for over 260 students, of which 37 were shortlisted for the workshop, says Srinagesh Chatarajupalli, Principal – Education and Research, Infosys.
Hands-on lab work
The objective behind the workshop was to help students get hands-on lab work. The course was aligned with the World Skills IT competences and aims at enhancing the basic computer skills of the students, he says.
“We learned a lot and developed websites on our own. These were not taught in school. The best thing was to work in the lab under the tutors’ guidance,” says Yash Agarwal, another student, whose team developed the student information management system.
It’s not just developing a website, students will also have to give a presentation, explain the benefits of their respective projects and the tools used to develop them, said, Ravi Kumar. S, Head, Hyderabad Development Centre, Infosys.
