Most of us wonder as to how the labyrinthine maps printed in the atlas or books are drafted and the various aspects of surveying that impart precision to them.
Visitors to the Survey of India office at Uppal on Wednesday got answers to these and other similar questions at an exhibition conducted on the occasion of National Science Day. They got a chance to have a closer look at map preparation and were also told about the different strategies involved in their digitisation. The latest to be prepared are the 1:10,000 scale maps that provide a wide range of information about the subject, a surveyor said. “Though we have it as a subject, we were never exposed to such minute details,” K. Ravi, a polytechnic student, said.
On digitalisation of maps, they were told how eight different files get merged together to form a design file or the final copy of a map.
