The launch of ABCs of Brain Compatible Learning by Anjum Babukhan, an educationist, on Friday evening here led to an animated discussion on the state of education and learning methodology being followed in the country.

“The four Cs of learning of 21st century are communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. We have to learn to keep learning,” said the author, speaking at the panel discussion for releasing the book.

“My mother never asked me to read my class books. She just wanted to see me happy and she knew what made me happy. I climbed a lot of trees and jumped from them. What I am doing now is what I learnt as a child. The tree jumping prepared me for the action sequences,” said S.S. Rajamouli, director of blockbuster Baahubali .

“We have engineers and postgraduates working with us, but sadly they don’t know how the world works. We have to make them unlearn to make them learn,” said Mr. Rajamouli, sharing the challenges he faces while making his movies.

This was Mr. Rajamouli’s first appearance in a long time at a public event as he is busy shooting the second part of Baahubali .

Dissecting the education system, Ajit Rangnekar, former dean of Indian School of Business said: “In the 60s and 70s, we had five IITs, now we have about 10 or 15 while the population has quadrupled. That’s why there is so much premium to learn quickly that in the process critical, analytical and thinking ability are lost by our children and it has become a big concern for us.”

Sharing her experience as a parent, Sangita Reddy, ED, Apollo Hospitals, pointed out the link between pinching of the ear and memory/thinking which forms part of the kinesthetics of learning detailed in the ABCs of Brain Compatible Learning .

“I have put info-nuggets in the book which will help both learners and trainers about the psychology and the biology of learning. Like, fear is a short-term motivator while encouragement is a long-term one,” said Ms. Anjum, who has degree in psychology.
