Tension prevailed for some time at Indiramma Colony on town outskirts due to residents staging a protest demanding shifting of a cattle slaughter yard from near the Colony.

Villagers from Kachkanti and residents of Indiramma colony, adjacent to the Aerodrome on the outskirts of the town, staged a protest on Friday demanding shifting of the cattle slaughter yard.

The protesters entered into argument over the issue with the butchers who were preparing to slaughter cattle at the yard.

At one stage it looked as if things would go out of hand. The police however, intervened and brought the situation under control.

The protesters alleged that the stench from putrefication of offal and other discarded organic matter from the slaughter yard was causing them problems.

Municipal officials who arrived on the scene, as part of the efforts to defuse the tension there, revealed that the butchers had been allotted a piece of land near Bangaruguda stream for setting up a slaughter yard but they had not shifted.

Later, a delegation of Hindu Vahini, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen leaders met Superintendent of Police M. Sreenivas seeking his intervention in finding a lasting solution to the problem.

The district police chief asked Municipal authorities to take steps to shift the slaughter yard within a week.
