Absence of toilets continues to be a major problem with the government schools in the city. Even where they exist, poor maintenance coupled with lack of water facility is leading to student dropout, particularly of girls.
In a bid to tide over the problem, the district administration has sought Rs.3 crore from the government to provide sufficient toilets in all the 600 odd primary schools in the State capital.
The sum of Rs.10 lakh to Rs.12 lakh given through the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan is hardly sufficient to meet the need, it is said.
To address the problem, the district authorities have floated a tender for maintenance of the school toilets at around Rs. 3,900 per month.
Though a good number of agencies have responded to it, the State government is said to be sitting over the matter now.
