Telangana March: police expect trouble

SCR cancels all MMTS and local trains, 12 express trains and 25 passenger trains

Patrolling has been stepped up on the city outskirts and ‘identified’ pockets where miscreants could target private properties ahead of the Telangana March called by the Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) on Sunday.

Notwithstanding the repeated assertions by the march organisers that it would be a peaceful one, police are not leaving anything to chance. They anticipate that city buses and RTC buses coming from the districts might be torched or damaged in the early hours and, similarly, private buses parked in lanes could be attacked.

Railway properties too could be in focus for those who would like to create trouble, say police. Apparently after the police sounded an alert, the South Central Railway (SCR) cancelled all MMTS and local trains in the twin cities. The SCR has also cancelled 12 express trains and 25 passenger trains, in addition to regulating the operation of two express trains and five passenger trains.

Intelligence agencies anticipate that some left parties and student organisations supporting the March could resort to violence, but such instances could be heavily localised.

The police have already sounded a note of caution and asked occupants of some business establishments to cover their buildings with plastic nets to minimise damage in stone-hurling.
