Telangana government puts cap on crop loan waiver

: The Telangana government has decided to waive crop loans of up to Rs 1 lakh from June 2013 to June 2014. However, loans exceeding this amount will not be waived. Similarly, crop loans taken after mortgaging gold will also be not entertained.

Chief Minister, K. Chandrashekar Rao, indicated this at the first State Level Bankers’ Committee meeting held here on Wednesday. Chief Secretary, Rajiv Sharma, and Finance Minister, Etala Rajender, were also present.

The total liability to the government on account of the loan waiver is expected to be around Rs. 12,000 crore. Later, speaking to the media, the Finance Minister said the TRS government was committed to fulfilling the poll promises made by it. The bankers were told to get the details of outstanding loans in the stipulated period in the next meeting, he said.
