The death of two software engineers Sudeepto and Uttiya Mukherjee in a road accident near Kukatpally Housing Board (KPHB) Colony in the early hours of Saturday took a new turn with the family members of the victims alleging that their friend, Somajith Basu, in whose house the weekend party was organised in Bachupally, was responsible for the incident.
The police earlier told that the Honda City car driven by Sudeepto rammed a tree at Pragathinagar near KPHB Colony. Sudeepto and Uttiya died on the spot, while their friends Neeladri Gosh and Gourav Maithi escaped with injuries.
But Sudeepto’s family members, who came to claim the body, told the police that he could not drive. This led to doubts about who actually drove the vehicle when the mishap occurred. “When questioned, Neeladri and Gourav initially claimed that it was Sudeepto who was driving the car, but on sustained interrogation, they revealed that Basu was the one who actually drove the vehicle,” said KPHB Sub-Inspector Tejavath Srisailam Naik. Basu is working as a software engineer. Mr. Naik said both Sudeepto and Uttiya were sitting on the left side of the car when the accident happened. After the vehicle hit the tree at high speed, the impact was on the left side and the duo bore the brunt resulting in their death instantly, he explained.
He said Basu also forced the complainant, Neeladri, to inform the police that Sudeepto was driving the vehicle. “As of now, he is absconding. His mobile phone was also switched off,” Mr. Naik added. KPHB Inspector V. Srikanth Goud said a lookout notice was issued against Basu.
