A facility, on a 60,000 sq ft built up area, to conduct high quality research on Intelligent Systems is to be established by Tata Consultancy Services at the IIIT-Hyderabad.

On Thursday, Tata Group chairman Cyrus P. Mistry laid the foundation stone of the facility named after F.C.Kohli, a founding member and former Deputy Chairman of TCS. To be set up with an investment of Rs.20 crore, the FC Kohli Centre on Intelligent Systems (KCIS), besides pursuing high quality research, would focus on entrepreneurship promotion in the Intelligent Systems area.

Unveiling a plaque, Mr. Mistry said TCS and IIIT-H, two leaders, have joined hands for the centre in a city that already has established itself as a technology hub and is growing.

It is an apt location, he declared, adding: “We are setting up a legacy… (with) world class research systems.” Hailing the contribution of Mr.Kohli to the growth of the Indian IT industry, Mr. Mistry said: “His systematic effort laid the foundation for the IT industry.”

TCS CEO and managing director N.Chandrasekaran said in late 1960s Mr.Kohli had the foresight and conviction that something extraordinary could be created in the technology industry in India. TCS is committed to research, on which “we continue to invest significantly,” he said, while adding that Artificial Intelligence will redefine and redesign every industry.

KCIS, he said, will carry “high impact research in Intelligent Systems, a critical area for carrying out sustainable innovation in topics like natural language processing, robotics and cognitive sciences.
