February 14, 2014 12:15 am | Updated November 17, 2021 12:01 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Twenty-one-year-old Sheela, who was allegedly set afire by her lover and the latter’s family members three days ago at Musheerabad, succumbed to her burns while undergoing treatment in a hospital here on Thursday.

Musheerabad police altered the section of law from attempt to murder (307) of IPC to murder (302) following her death. The Prevention of Atrocities Against SCs/STs Act too was invoked against the accused Sai Ram, who is pursuing CA programme, his father Chandrashekhar, mother Sunitha and sisters, Bhavani and Swati.

The woman told the police that she had had a physical relationship with him. She charged that her pregnancy was aborted at Ram’s behest since he assured her of marriage.

As per her statement in the hospital, Ram called up her to come to his house in Gemini colony of Musheerabad on Monday evening to discuss about their marriage, the police said. After reaching there, Ram and his family members allegedly entered into an argument with her.

“They sprinkled petrol on her and set her afire resulting in 86 per cent burns to her,” the Inspector said quoting her statement.

The woman died on Thursday afternoon in the hospital.
