Operations at the 5,000 branches of public sector as well as old generation private sector banks in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh came to a grinding half on Tuesday with the staff, responding to United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) call for a south zone strike, staying away from work.

The strike for immediate settlement of wage revision was total, UFBU convenor for the two States V.V.S.R. Sarma said, estimating 80,000 staffers to have participated in the protest. With no agreement in sight, the zonal level strike, he said, would move to the northern region on Wednesday.
