Rusted iron rods, stones, wooden beams and other construction material lie strewn on the road. For months, traffic has been prohibited on this stretch and vehicles have to take detour in narrow lanes. Pedestrians struggle to find a way over the piled material and business here has been badly affected. That’s the sorry tale of the stretch at Nallakunta from Fever Hospital junction to Tilak Nagar.
The work on relaying the underground stormwater line here was taken up in December 2012 and was supposed to have been completed in six months, but ever since delays have resulted in the deadline being pushed repeatedly.
“The GHMC officials, during their recent assessments, said that the reconstruction work could extend to another six months,” said Parashuram, a trader.
The reconstruction work for the underground stormwater line on the stretch was taken up when the road adjacent to the Fever Hospital collapsed in August 2011. Deeming the entire line to be weak, the GHMC initiated drain reconstruction.
While appreciating the authorities’ move, locals are annoyed over delays, which lead to difficulty in commuting and also loss of business for shopkeepers.
However, when contacted, GHMC engineer-in-chief R. Dhan Singh said: “It is a complicated underground line work as we had to cross over the Krishna Water pipeline works. Traffic had to diverted and poles shifted. But, we have now overcome all odds and are racing against time to complete the storm water line to directly join the Hussainsagar surplus nala in 10 days”.
