March 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The proposed Telangana Municipalities Act should do away with shortcomings of A.P. Municipalities Act and make provisions to hold staff of municipalities accountable, ease property tax procedures and do away with certain outdated provisions, demanded the Forum for Good Governance.

Speaking to media here on Wednesday, M. Padmanabha Reddy, secretary, Forum for Good Governance, welcomed constitution of a Cabinet panel to propose new Act for Telangana and described the A.P. Municipalities Act 1965 as being defective in many aspects and one that did not provide space for tax payers to demand for services.

Mr. Reddy called for simplifying procedures involved in according permissions for house construction and if required, have the applications processed by notified licensed engineers and clear them within a stipulated period of time.

He said outdated provisions such as tax on animals, bicycles, tricycles, carts etc., need to be abolished.
