The State government has decided to initiate stringent action against those selling spurious seed to farmers.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao said a special session of the Legislature would be convened, any time after the party’s public meeting slated in Warangal on April 27, to enact a legislation for stringent action against the spurious seed sellers. The provisions would ensure that those found guilty of the offence would be made to reimburse the total loss incurred by farmers in the event of crop failure.

The Chief Minister, in his concluding address at the party’s 16th plenary here on Friday, warned those selling spurious seed against continuing the practice lest they would face stern action, including imprisonment. The government had recently arrested four persons who were found guilty of selling spurious seed and provisions of the Preventive Detention Act had been invoked against them. Asserting that his government was firm on providing corruption-free governance, he said it has decided to initiate action against those levelling baseless charges against the government. The Ministers and officials of the concerned departments would forthwith be asked to file cases against those levelling charges against the government seeking proof for their claims, he said.

He found fault with the TDP and Congress leaders for levelling charges against the government. “In fact, the previous Congress and TDP governments had a hand in irregularities,” he said. Quoting irregularities in sand mining during the previous regimes, he said the government’s revenue through sand mining dropped to ₹5 lakh at the end of the Congress regime. The revenue had increased significantly over the past three years and the government could net ₹461 crore last financial year after streamlining the procedures involved in granting licences.

Referring to other issues, he expressed concern over girls from SC and ST communities, who were coming to urban areas to pursue higher studies, facing difficulties in finding suitable accommodation. “There are instances where they are being denied rental accommodation in the name of caste,” he said. The government has, therefore, decided to construct residential degree colleges in all the revenue divisions of the State to ensure that girls coming to cities for higher studies do not face difficulties in terms of accommodation.

Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao exhorted the party leaders and workers to dedicate themselves to people’s cause to ensure that their aspirations were fulfilled. The government, on its part, would work out the modalities to take the schemes intended for the poor, he said.
