The Andhra Pradesh government is likely to seek the Centre’s intervention to closely monitor the dams of Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar Project (NSP) along with all its regulators both for power generation and canals as the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) has not been acting on its repeated request.
It is planning to submit a representation to the Ministry of Water Resources citing the repeated violations of the directions of the KRMB by the Telangana government for integrated operation of common reservoirs of Srisailam and Nagarjuana Sagar according to the existing operational protocol for project-wise release of water until new operational protocol is devised.
Jurisdiction
The government also plans to point out to the Centre that it was yet to notify jurisdiction of the board according to Clause 87(1) of A.P. Reorganisation Act, 2014. While A.P. has control of all the common reservoirs of Srisailam dam along with all regulators, the Left Bank Power House of pumped storage of Srisailam dam is controlled by Telangana government and it has not been obeying the orders of the Superintending Engineer, Srisailam Dam Circle.
However, for utilisation of water from Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir for Krishna Delta, NSP right canal and left canal at the State border, A.P. has to place its indents to the NSP authorities working under Telangana for drinking and irrigation requirements from time to time. But the NSP authorities have several times declined to release water for legitimate requirement under NSP right canal and also to Krishna delta and for the tail-end areas in A.P. under left canal.
The A.P. government would also highlight, as to how against the advice of KRMB, Telangana had resorted to intermixing of other projects for estimating the water allocation, demand and use. If the situation continued, then A.P. would not be able to realise its allocated share for projects dependent on Srisailam and NSP.
A.P. likely to cite repeated violations of KRMB directives by Telangana
