‘National Green Tribunal has asked the govt. to stop the works on May 1’, restrained the respondents from carrying out any such work till further orders.

The Members of Save Our Urban lake (SOUL) here on Sunday alleged that the State government is committing contempt of court by allegedly continuing works to dewater the Hussainsagar lake, in spite of an interim order from the National Green Tribunal asking to stop the works on May 1.

“The NGT clearly stated that it doubts if the State government had conducted a detailed scientific study about dewatering the Hussainsagar. In spite of an interim order, the government has been disobeying the orders,” charged Lubna Sarwath, convenor, SOUL, at a press conference.

B.V. Subba Rao, founder-member, SOUL, also alleged that the weir of the Hussainsagar that allows water to flow downstream when the water levels reach high levels, was already broken.

A copy of the NGT order, dated May 1, by Justice Dr. P. Jyothimani, restrained the respondents from carrying out any such work till further orders. The next hearing is on May 22.

The respondents are Water Board, GHMC, HMDA and Principal Secretary, Telangana.
