Special Circle to check upkeep of roads

March 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - HYDERABAD:

In a step aimed at improving the condition of main thoroughfares, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), has decided to create a special Circle dedicated to monitor more than 900 km road main network that crisscross the city.

This new Circle to be staffed with required engineering staff, in coordination with other wings of the civic body would be entrusted with the task of monitoring entire main road network on daily basis and ensure upkeep and sanitation.

Responsibilities

“The team will be responsible for having the stretches swept, maintained clean and are pothole free,” said an official, wishing to remain anonymous.

The GHMC Commissioner and Special Officer, Somesh Kumar, said the special Circle for main roads would be provided with a Superintending Engineer and assisted by four Executive Engineers apart from other support staff.

“At present, the nearly 900 km stretch of main roads in the city is spread over seven Circles and at some places, left side of the road is in one circle and right side in the other. This leads to uneven service. For a more focussed maintenance, the concept of a special Circle is worked out,” he said.

Outsourcing manpower

The civic body has recently decided to outsource the maintenance of main roads and agencies selected would have to ensure the roads assigned to them were without potholes, cracks or craters. The special Circle members would also be assigned stretches that have to be inspected daily and issues such as potholes resolved immediately through outsourcing agency.

“Not only potholes, the new Circle staff will monitor the conditions of kerbs, water stagnation points, footpaths and, avenue plantation and even the functioning of streetlights,” said Mr. Somesh Kumar.

Also, 10 big sweeping machines were being added to present fleet of six to have the entire main road network of the city machine swept, he added.
