Solid waste management rules set to be framed

Municipal Administration Principal Secretary Arvind Kumar asked officials to identify abandoned quarry sites to use them as dump yards for disposal of solid waste from urban areas.

Presiding over the State-level advisory board meeting at the Secretariat on Monday, he said the government would shortly formulate solid waste management rules for the State. The Administrative Staff College of India has been asked to draft policy guidelines for the State in consultation with various stake-holders, he said, and asked pollution control board officials to inspect malls, function halls, hotels and hospitals and take stock of measures implemented for segregation and storage of solid waste, and submit a report at the earliest.

He also asked officials to take up a comprehensive survey of rag-pickers and suggest procedures for utilising their services in the urban local bodies.
