A soldier of 190 Regiment, Ravi Mishra, 28, undergoing treatment reportedly for a psychological disorder, opened 12 rounds of fire in the air at the bustling Tadban crossroads in Bowenpally on Thursday.
Mishra was later overpowered and taken into custody by the military authorities. The incident left hundreds of commuters passing by the crowded junction and residents of the surrounding civilians localities shocked. Though the soldier fired 12 rounds in different directions, none was hit.
Psychological problem
The soldier hailing from Uttar Pradesh is married and has a son. Source said he was treated for past one year for a psychological problem and was discharged the previous day. Around 5 p.m., he came out of his quarter and snatched an INSAS rifle from a sentry at the gate.
“Before the sentry could react, the soldier ran towards the road and started firing in the air randomly. Scared by the gun shots, some commuters ran inside roadside buildings for cover,” the Begumpet ACP I.T.V.S. Suryanarayana said. A captain of the regiment ran behind the soldier and overpowered him.
Case registered
The Bowenpally police registered a criminal case under the Arms Act. The soldier was in the custody of the military authorities when reports last came in.
