You like the song you hear playing in neighbour’s room, but you don’t know its name? No worries! Just open the Shazam or Soundhound app on your smart phone and you can immediately identify and download the song.

You’ve taken a wrong turn on the road leading to your friend’s house and don’t know what to do? Just open your Google Maps Navigation and type in the address you were invited to. The lady on your phone will guide you on your way.

With applications, or apps, it is possible to have the whole world at your fingertips. Apps also help with quick information retrieval and offer countless forms of entertainment.

Read books online

Youngsters these days have taken to reading books online. With apps like Wattpad, Mangareader and Kindle, we can now read fan fiction, anime and classics. Avani Vyas, a college student, says, “I read books online on fanfic.net. I like reading fan fiction because some stories are really nice and it offers new points of view to an existing storyline.”

There are numerous apps online to help you unwind after a strenuous day. “After a long day, I like playing games to relieve my mind before I sleep. I play Jetpack Joyride or Minion rush. These apps help me de-stress,” says Yash Agarwala, an engineering student.

Whatsapp, a free messaging app is the latest fad.

“It is a really nice application. It’s convenient as it runs on internet connectivity and you can send countless messages, even while on roaming. Also, you can chat with anybody, whether local or international,” exclaims Issac Masilamani, a student at Loyola Degree College. There are also varied versions of WhatsApp such as Line and BBM for users to choose from.

With the advent of smart phone and apps, it should come as no surprise that people all around the world are connected. The smart phone has turned into a portable lifestyle which fits into one’s hand.
