Chairman of The Indian Council of Social Science Research, Sukhdev Thorat, on Sunday categorically stated that smaller States should ensure participatory democracy and take steps to see that every section of society, especially the minorities, got their due share in governance.

“You have struggled a lot and achieved your objective of a separate State but it is time for more work now to ensure that people are made a part of governance and showcase the youngest State as one that can show other States the way,” he said, delivering the 5{+t}{+h}Prof. Jayashankar Memorial Lecture here, organised by the Telangana Intellectuals Forum.

Ease in administration

“As a student of Dr. Ambedkar, I was actually a supporter of smaller States. In his book, ‘Thoughts of linguistic States’, Ambedkar had referred to one State-one Language.

However, he was also for smaller States for administrative convenience and in saying so, he was particular that the democracy in smaller States should be inclusive and strive for equal opportunities in all sectors for all sections of society, particularly in governance,” Prof. Thorat said.

Telangana joint action committee chairman M. Kodandaram explained the upcoming programmes of JAC.
