In a shocking incident, two skeletons, believed to be of natives of the neighbouring Guntur district, were found by the police here on Monday.
The incident came light when some persons passing by the shrub and tree cover in Adavi Devulapalli village in the mandal sensed foul smell and alerted the Miryalaguda police.
Clothes, footwear and a driving licence of the victims were found, and everything else was just in skeleton form, the local police said. A forensic team collected samples, and suspected that the human remains were at least a fortnight old. Stray and wild animals eating the dead bodies could also have accelerated the decay, and the skulls and other remains were scattered.
The doctors conducted a post-mortem examination at the site.
For the local police, however, the immediate clue from the crime scene was a driving licence that led to a communication with the Gurazala police in Guntur district.
According to the police there, the driving licence holder Kore Appa Rao, and Muvva Kasulu, wife of Venkateswarlu, both natives of Gurazala mandal were missing since January 1, 2018.
Sources said the duo had earlier run into controversies over alleged extra-marital relations, which were later settled by their elders. But this time, they were invisible for over a month.
It is also suspected that the couple might have taken a short route by the river Krishna flowing between the two districts, or the roadway, within 50 km distance from Gurazala to Damaracherla mandal. Investigation by police of both the districts is on, and a disclosure would be made once the forensic experts conclude the reason for death.
