April 25, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Telangana State Government began a probe into the killing of five under-trial prisoners in Aler of Nalgonda district, having gotten hold of the case diary.

On Friday, the SIT led by IGP, Personnel, Sandeep Sandilya, held its first meeting in Hyderabad and reviewed the case diary prepared by Bhongir DSP S. Manohar Reddy. The SIT had been waiting for the case diary comprising details of the investigation carried out by the local police into the escort policemen gunning down prisoners facing terror cases.

The SIT reviewed the case diary and is preparing an action plan on how to proceed with the probe. It will visit the spot near Kandigandla thanda on the outskirts of Tanguturu village in Aler.

“The 33-seater Eicher mini bus, the leading chains with hand-cuff at one end used for the prisoners and the arms and ammunition used by the police will also be examined by it,” a top police official, disclosed.

How did Vikaruddin manage to snatch the INSAS rifle from a constable and open fire even as one of his hands was cuffed? This issue was raised by families of the prisoners and even organisations like the Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee-India. The police have their own version. The crucial part of the SIT probe is to thoroughly examine the contention of the police that the1.5 metre long chain could facilitate the prisoner’s movement in that much radius within the vehicle.
