The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has taken a serious view of the reality shows featuring dances by children on TV channels and warned that it would stop shows violating children's rights.
The commission was reacting to a plea by some parents of children that it should not act on the representation by NGOs last week.
These organisations sought a ban on shows as they were obscene. The SHRC Chairman B. Subhashan Reddy told the delegation of six parents that objectionable scenes should not be displayed in the shows.
The shows could not escape action of the commission if they were indeed found to be objectionable. He is stated to have asked them if they were not uncomfortable with the dressing of their children in the shows.
He advised the parents to ensure proper upbringing of the children. He expressed dismay that the parents allowed obscene dances in place of traditional ones. He indicated taking a decision on the issue by April 28.
The parents, including an ophthalmologist Mamata, informed the commission that there was neither obscenity nor vulgarity in the dances by children as alleged by the NGOs and a women's organisation.
They told him that the shows helped in identifying and promoting young talent. These were also a source of income to poor parents. As such, they should not be stopped.
The All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA), Vanamali Cultural Society, Society for Education through Community Mobilisation and a social worker P.A. Devi had petitioned the SHRC on Friday and Saturday stating that the realty shows adversely impacted children as the songs and dances in them bordered on ‘vampish' performances.
