Eight persons who were caught by SHE teams of the city police on the charge of sexually harassing women were awarded jail terms by the city court. While two were sentenced to three days’ imprisonment, six others were awarded two-day jail term. Another 16 were fined Rs. 50 each.
Sharing details about the performance of the SHE teams constituted to curb sexual harassment of women in public places, Additional Commissioner (Crimes), Hyderabad, Swati Lakra, said that a total of 80 persons were caught by the teams so far. “The offenders are aged between 17 years and 35 years and were caught by our teams near bus stops, colleges, ladies hostels and picnic spots. We have produced 16 of them before the court,” Ms. Lakra said.
Aside from catching those involved in sexually harassing women, the teams are also engaged in creating awareness. The teams are visiting educational institutions, ladies hostels and public places to sensitise women about the concept. “Our teams are also visiting the colleges and impressing upon the managements to form internal committees to protect women from sexual harassment. Also special defence techniques are being provided to girl students,” the official said.
