A private school principal landed behind the bars on Monday for allegedly beating up a student accusing her of stealing Rs.1,500.

The student is an inmate of the school hostel and the principal too lives in the same campus.

Two days ago, the principal called the student to the house, confined her in a room and started “interrogating” her for the theft of Rs.1,500, police said.

According to police, the girl was confined for several hours and thrashed with a gas stove pipe resulting in injuries. The principal also threatened the student not to reveal the matter to anyone.

However, the alleged thrashing of the student came to light when her mother visited her daughter on Sunday.

On Monday, police registered a case under sections 323 (assault) and 342 (illegal confinement) of Indian Penal Code following a complaint lodged by the girl’s mother and arrested the principal. The girl is under treatment at a hospital.
