Since last month, over 50 structures have been demolished

The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) would continue its ongoing special drive against unauthorised constructions in the area and the initiative was taken up on the instructions of the Union Defence Ministry, said Chief Executive Officer Sujatha Gupta on Thursday.

SCB authorities had launched the special drive last month and since then over 50 structures, including portions of about 10 old grant bungalows were demolished for different violations.

At a board meeting held here, Union Minister of State for Roads, Transport and Highways and Malkajgiri MP Sarve Satyanarayana had urged the SCB authorities to keep the ongoing drive against unauthorised constructions in abeyance.

Mr. Satyanarayana, who was a special invitee, while appreciating the efforts of the CEO in demolishing unauthorised structures, observed that if the unauthorised structures were regularised after levying penalty, it could yield a lot of revenue to the Board. “I will speak to Defence Minister A. K. Antony over the issue and it will be better if the drive is stopped till then,” said Mr. Satyanarayana. Local MLA Shankar Rao, another special invitee to the meeting, also supported him.

However, an unfazed Ms. Gupta asserted that the drive was launched following instructions from the Ministry of Defence. “The demolition drive will not be stopped unless there are clear instructions from the Defence Ministry,” she affirmed.

The CEO also reminded that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), had in the past, pointed out that despite issuing several notices to building owners about unauthorised constructions, the SCB had not demolished many structures.

To this, Mr. Satyanarayana remarked that the CBI had no business to deal with demolitions in the SCB and he would also speak to the CBI Director on the issue. SCB would constitute an enquiry committee to investigate into any lapses in checking for unauthorised structures. The enquiry would be completed in six months, said Ms. Gupta.
