The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) will soon deploy its waste management and disposal plan to rid its streets of garbage, and also accrue revenue through sale of waste.
Secunderabad cantonment produces about 100 tonnes of municipal waste every day, which is dumped at a 14-acre site in Turkapally near Bolarum. The board will distribute coloured bags, beginning with hotels, for segregation of waste. Wet waste will be used to produce compost at a central composting facility that is likely to be set up at the dumping yard itself. Dry waste will be processed and sold for recycling purposes, an official said.
After establishing segregated waste collection process for hospitals, the move will be replicated in residential areas, said SCB Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sujatha Gupta. A public meeting with colony associations is being planned to discuss the waste management plan.
“For both residential and commercial establishments, the new waste management plan will be included as bye laws in the agreement draw. This is to ensure compliance,” said Ms. Gupta. Better management of waste is expected to pacify residents of Turkapally, unhappy with the location of a dumping yard in their neighbourhood. Before Turkpally, waste was dumped in Hasmathpet. Nearly a decade ago, SCB stopped dumping at the site following objections from the Pollution Control Board. The waste disposal plan that SCB plans to adopt is inspired by Panaji’s model. During a board meeting, the board had announced that composting units would also be set up in colonies where space is available.
