Giving into the rising complaints from residents on the rampant dog menace, the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) has decided to sign a pact with a voluntary organisation to catch stray dogs, sterilise, vaccinate and release them.
The NGO, Vet Animal Welfare and Rural Development Society, will be catching strays and sterilising them within the Cantonment limits at Rs. 595 per dog.
Temporary arrangements like constructing a shed and providing infrastructure like an operation theatre at Turkaplly ground would be made, said Secunderabad Cantonment Board Chief Executive Officer Sujatha Gupta during a board meeting held here on Wednesday.
Mini sports stadium
Efforts are also on to construct a Mahila Swashakthi Bhavan and a mini sports stadium in the Cantonment. Local MLA Shanker Rao requested the Board to allot some land for constructing these two facilities at a cost of Rs. 25 lakh and Rs. 2.10 crore respectively with the Municipal Administration and Urban Development funds. Locations will also be identified shortly for these facilities, she said.
She requested the elected board members to prepare a land use plan for implementation of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) schemes in Secunderabad Cantonment Board limits. The Ministry of Urban Development has already issued guidelines to earmark commercial, semi-commercial, residential zone, green zone etc in the Secunderabad Cantonment.
“Once a land use plan is prepared, it would make Secunderabad Cantonment Board eligible for Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission schemes,” she explained.
It was decided to reserve ward no.8 for Scheduled Castes in Secunderabad Cantonment Board as it had the highest SC population. Defence authorities in principle have also agreed to permit construction of five octroi posts at different areas.
Cantonment Board president Sunil S. Bodhe instructed the authorities to study the possibility of collecting octroi tax from respective traders unlike collecting from every vehicle owner, as was being done in Pune.
