Kozhikode’s Priya P. is the first girl and also the first from the Scheduled Castes to top the entrance for admission to BA Hons course of the prestigious university
She has not only stormed the male bastion but has also achieved the rare distinction of being the first person from the Scheduled Castes to top the entrance test to the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU).
Priya. P from Kozhikode scored a high 89 per cent in the entrance test for admission to the BA Hons (English) programme, in the process becoming the first girl to top the exam.
“I am in love with books and perhaps that led to my passion towards English literature,” Priya told The Hindu from Kozhikode.
Such was her passion for literature that she convinced her father, a DGM at BSNL, who was keen that she join an engineering course.
“After the first rank, my parents just cannot deny me the opportunity to study literature,” said the student of Kendriya Vidyalaya No 1 in Kozhikode. “I am a bookworm and I never enjoyed studying science and maths.”
Though the top rank was not on her mind, Priya was determined to get into EFLU, given its reputation for being one of the best colleges to study English literature.
While she is yet to make up her mind on her career plans, Priya is sure it will be something related to literature.
Eflu Vice-Chancellor Sunaina Singh said Priya would be an inspiration to all those who aspired to be admitted to the prestigious university, more so to those from deprived communities.
