The South Central Railway and APSRTC officials went into overdrive on Sunday to manage the heavy rush of outbound passengers on the eve of Sankranti.
The railway stations at Kacheguda, Nampally and Secunderabad were teeming with passengers. The scene at Mahatma Gandhi and Jubilee Bus Stations was no different.
Officials said an estimated two lakh passengers had left the city to their native places.
Till late on Saturday, as many as 2,106 special buses were operated by the APSRTC, with the number on Sunday estimated at over 600 buses, said G.V. Ramana Rao, Executive Director, Operations, APSRTC.
Interestingly, Sunday saw the SCR setting a record with its drive against unauthorised travel and un-booked luggage, collecting Rs. 20 lakh, the highest-ever penalty on a single day. A 160-member ticket-checking team, led by Ramana Reddy, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, checked 103 trains, including 62 express, 19 passenger and 22 local trains.
