In an effort to beef up security at Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS), the APSRTC is installing 26 Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at the station premises and the installation process would be completed within a week.

All the cameras would be installed at key positions in the station and would be connected to a central server room. Television sets would be placed in the Security Staff Room and Ranga Reddy Regional Manager's office to observe the images recorded in the cameras.
The total cost of the project is about Rs.50 lakh, said APSRTC Vice-chairman and Managing Director B. Prasada Rao. The entire set up is almost ready and presently authorities are conducting trial runs. All these are high-end cameras and come with the option of pan, tilt and zoom in facility. The images captured in these cameras will be flashed on the television sets in a grid format with a time frequency of three seconds, he informed.
Everyday over one lakh passengers utilise the services at the station, which has over 2800 bus departures a day.
“Once the installation process is complete and cameras are put into operation, similar security equipment would be installed at the Jubilee Bus station, Secunderabad and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru bus station in Vijayawada,” said Mr. Rao.
Earlier in June this year, the Corporation had installed three doorframe metal detectors at MGBS.
While, one was placed at the main entrance near Mahatma Gandhi statue, the other two were placed at the Karimnagar departure end. Each doorframe costs about Rs.20,000 and the Corporation is also planning to install two more such detectors at the Kalikabar-end.
