HYDERABAD: Baggage screeners at the GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) recently detected 12 kilos of Ephedrine, a banned drug that was being allegedly carried in the registered baggage by a South African national. It was estimated to be worth Rs. 1.2 crore in the international market.

The passenger was travelling from Hyderabad to Abu Dhabi by Etihad Airways flight No. EY 275 on August 1. As soon as the baggage went through the security process, the screeners screamed out the alert and further checking revealed that about 12 kilos of the banner drug was being carried in powder and crystalline form, as part of the baggage. The passenger was then handed over to the Customs department.

In a press release, CEO of GHIAL, S.G.K. Kishore said that at Hyderabad airport they were totally committed to the safety and security of passengers. “We pro-actively partner with regulatory and law enforcement agencies to ensure that the airport was safe and secure, every hour, every day. We strive to maintain the highest standards of alertness and are proud of our dedicated staff who identified and flagged the prohibited items hidden in the baggage,” he said.
