GHMC officials expressed confidence that by about 9 a.m. on Wednesday, the roads will be mostly clear for daily commuters.
Commissioner B.Janardhan Reddy said it was the first time ever in recent times that the Balapur Ganesh idol was immersed before sunset.
The strategy of moving the 57-foot Khairatabad idol early in the day paid off, and it had reached the immersion point by 10.30 a.m, and downed into the waters of the Hussain Sagar by 2 p.m. Mayor Bonthu Ram Mohan arrived at the Khairatabad pandal and personally monitored the lifting of the idol.
GHMC Commissioner and deputy mayor Baba Fasiuddin too were on the field, with the latter inspecting the immersion arrangements at the Saroornagar lake.
Instructions were issued to officials to ensure clean toilets, provide medical facilities at all the lakes, and fogging and disinfectants be sprayed near critical places. Corporation officials borne by bikes monitored the situation throughout.
The Telangana and Andhra Plastic Manufacturers Association has set up two stalls at Abids and NTR Marg to clear plastic waste.
The Commissioner flagged off the TAAPMA’s ‘Swachh Raths’ which will promote waste segregation during Ganesh immersion and also for entire month.
The Home Minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy arrived at the Command and Control Room and monitored the situation from there.
Many idols were immersed in the 15-odd baby ponds constructed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation near major lakes, a press statement by the corporation said.
