People from all walks of life paid rich tributes to freedom fighters who laid down their lives to liberate the country from the clutches of British rule by observing a two-minute silence at 11 a.m. across the district on Tuesday.

Khammam MLA Puvvada Ajay Kumar and Commissioner of Police Tafseer Iqbal along with scores of people observed a two-minute silence at the Zilla Parishad Centre as a mark of respect to the martyrs.

Traffic movement came to a standstill on the busy road for a while as motorists paused for two minutes to observe silence. Earlier, police officials paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi by garlanding his portrait on his death anniversary on the Police Commissioner’s office premises.

Rallies and meetings were organised at different places across the district on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day on Tuesday. Students of a town-based private school took out a rally by carrying a 150-metre-long national flag under the aegis of the ABVP town unit to mark the Martyrs’ Day.
