S. Venkateshwar Rao, a Revenue official lodged in Cherlapally central prison here after being arrested on corruption charge, died on Monday morning.

The Cherlapally prison authorities said Mr. Rao complained of chest pain in the morning and died while being shifted from the prison to a hospital in an ambulance.

Mr. Rao was working as Special Deputy Collector in Urban Land Ceiling office at Nampally in Hyderabad. Anti-Corruption Bureau officials arrested him four days ago at his office after he allegedly accepted Rs. 50,000 bribe from a person.

His son Amar Das, who received the bribe sitting in his father’s office, too was arrested then. Both were shifted to Cherlapally prison after being produced before a local court.

The official’s son was present when Mr. Rao was being shifted to the hospital, the jail officials said.
