Debris dumped into the Chepala Kunta lake at Karmanghat.

Sree Ramana Colony Association on Tuesday requested the State government to protect the Chepala Kunta lake in Karmanghat from encroachments.

The total area of lake according to the revenue and municipal records is 10.986 acres. The association, in an e-mail to newspaper offices alleged illegal plotting was being done on the lake bed and debris was being used to fill it up.

Wall built

The encroachers had also constructed a wall all along the boundary stating that it would become a gated community.

The government had laid underground drainage for the surrounding colonies but left the outlet into the lake and now with the wall constructed, the sewerage was overflowing at the last manhole onto the roads and also into the open plots.

“We request the authorities concerned to take timely action not only to save the lake but also cause health problems to people living in the colonies around,” the association claimed.
