A host of madrassas in and around the city celebrated Republic Day with students and nazims of these institutions hoisting the flag.
One such madrassas was Ashraf-ul-Uloom at Saidabad in Old City. Students, some of them with the tri-colour pinned to the lapels of their kurtas, accompanied by their mudarris (teachers), unfurled the national flag.
Noted cleric and member of the State-level body of the Jamiat-e-Ulama Hind, Mufti Abdul Mughni Mazahiri, addressed the students and underscored the importance of upholding the Constitution.
“Two days are significant in the history of the country: August 15 and January 26. Both days mark the struggle of our forefathers and freedom fighters. Everybody has a right to the independence that they fought for. There is equality for all. Beliefs of one community should not be thrust upon another,” he said.
Much like others parts of the city, madrassas in the Old City, Toli Chowki, Mehdipatnam and Borabanda , among other neighbourhoods also held celebrations. Students and teachers spoke of freedom fighters and the Constitution of India. Teachers spoke about the articles and provisions of the Constitution and how they continue to remain central to the India democracy.
