Congress MLA M. Shashidhar Reddy has stressed the need for higher energy sources to ensure that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) stabilised at eight per cent for the next twenty five years.
The living standards of forty per cent of the country's population which is below poverty line will improve only when the GDP rules around eight per cent for twenty five years, he told a meeting organised by Non-Conventional Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NEDCAP) to mark the Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas (Renewable Energy Day).
Prizes distributed
He distributed prizes to students who participated in essay, painting, debate and paper presentation competitions organised by NEDCAP on the theme of ‘new and renewable energy'.
Mr. Reddy who is also a member of the National Disaster Management Authority said it was important to tap alternative sources, solar significantly, to meet energy requirements in the face of growing challenge of climate change. The greenhouse gases grew due to pollution on account of thermal power generating stations.
MLC P. Sudhakar Reddy called for literary competitions to students on the subject in rural areas to spread awareness. NEDCAP Vice-Chairman and Managing Director N. Bangara Raju said the installed capacity of power projects in renewable energy in the State was 856 MW.
An exhibition of solar panels was organised at the venue.
