A real estate businessman, who attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills along with four of his family members in a hotel at Yousufguda, died on Thursday.

The police said Anil Kumar of Srinagar Colony checked into the hotel along with his wife Lavanya (32) and three children Akhila (16), Akansha (12) and Alekya (8) on November 25. On Thursday afternoon, they had lunch in the hotel.

In the evening, the family failed to respond when the house-keeping staff repeatedly knocked the door.

As they did not respond, the staff opened the door using a master key and found Anil Kumar dead while the other four were in an unconscious state.

The hotel staff rushed Lavanya, Akhila, Akansha and Alekya to a nearby hospital where the condition of Lavanya is serious, according to police. In a suicide note recovered from the room, Anil Kumar said that he and his family were taking the drastic step due to increasing debts, the police said.
