Hyderabad seldom sleeps in the Ramzan month. And in the last two days it has even stopped blinking.

With Id-ul-Fitr set for Monday, shopping moved into top gear. The gusto and fervour of shoppers is seen to be believed. The way Hyderabadis are indulging in festivities will put even the big time shoppers in Singapore and Dubai to shame.

Bursting at the seams is too mild a term. The crowding around Charminar simply defies expression. Excuse-me-please don’t help here – you only get squeezed.

Feverish

Sunday night saw feverish shopping with shops remaining open throughout the night. It was last minute ‘kharidari’ at its best. The maximum rush could be seen at the matching centres and road side kiosks selling imitation jewellery.

Of course, Lad Bazar was the epicentre of the high voltage business. Women were busy trying to match the clothes already purchased with the shimmering bangles here. What mattered most was colour with the 20-somethings clamouring for scarlet reds, parrot greens and bright yellows. It was fashion accessories like scarves, purses, pins, clips and sari-falls that were in demand.

Big hit

Men were not far behind in shopping. ‘Sherwanis’ with intricate embroidery were a big hit. Some youngsters plumped for tasselled net ‘dupattas’ to go with the ‘sherwanis’ and kurta-pyjamas. Readymade shops at Abids, Kachiguda cross road, Palika Bazar in Secunderabad and Mehdipatnam did a brisk business as many went for off the rack wear.

Garments apart, dry fruits, caps, ‘surma’ and ‘semiyan’, the silken strands that go into making of ‘sheer-khurma’, had steady takers. So were perfumes and incense sticks in a variety of flavours.

Many also went for the electronic incense burners wherein the bark of ‘Cambodia tree’ grown in Assam is used.

‘Even though it is bit costly many prefer this aroma which is long lasting and pleasant”, said Majeedullah Siddiqui, a perfumer at Shahalibanda.

The Eid-ul-fitr prayers at Eidgah Miralam would be held at 10 a.m. The timings at other places are Mecca Masjid at 10 a.m, Shahi Masjid Bagh-e-Aam at 9 a.m., Red Hills playground 8.45 a.m., Eidgah Sanathnagar at 9 a.m., and Eidgah Madannapet at 10 a.m.
